CrowdStrike has announced it is joining the OpenID Foundation and IDPro, and has produced a press release of such concentrated self-regard that it briefly generates its own gravitational field. The actual news is straightforward: CrowdStrike has taken up membership in two industry standards bodies to contribute to open identity frameworks\u2014specifically the Shared Signals Framework and Continuous Access Evaluation Profile. These are legitimate, useful standards. The participation is welcome. This is, at its core, a company joining some committees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What the press release would like you to believe, however, is considerably grander. CrowdStrike’s CTO informs us that “no other platform has the real-time telemetry and adversary intelligence that Falcon does.” This is a bold claim inserted into an announcement about standards membership\u2014a context in which, by definition, the entire point is that multiple vendors share signals rather than hoarding them competitively. The irony of making an exclusivity argument inside a press release about open interoperability is either accidental or impressively brazen. Possibly both.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The quote carousel from foundation executives is, charitably, enthusiastic. The OpenID Foundation calls CrowdStrike’s participation “an invaluable addition” that “sends a powerful message.” IDPro is “thrilled.” Everyone is delighted. Nobody appears to have been asked a difficult question.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To be genuinely fair: the underlying technology direction is correct. AI agents and non-human identities operating with static access controls is a real and growing problem. Continuous, risk-aware identity enforcement is exactly where the industry needs to go. CrowdStrike’s Falcon telemetry contributing to shared signals frameworks could be meaningfully useful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But joining two industry bodies and contributing to standards work that already exists is not, by any reasonable measure, “defining identity security in the AI era.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
